This is a perfect indoor activity that helps your little one develop fine motor skills, engage in sensory stimulation and open-ended creativity.
Ages: 18M+
Development Focus:
Fine motor skills, creativity, sensorial stimulation
Playdough is great for strengthening fine motor muscles. These are the muscles that children will use later in life for handwriting, colouring and cutting, among other things.
Playing with playdough has very many benefits including developing vocabulary, early literacy, concentration, art and creativity and it encourages relaxation.
Now, onto the main event - making homemade playdough activity;
Start by mixing all your dry ingredients (flour & salt). Give your child the opportunity to measure the dry ingredients with you. It will be a great time to introduce early math skills like counting. In a separate bowl, pour warm water and food colour.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix the dough until it is ready for use. Provide your child with accessories such as a rolling pin, plastic knife and cookie cutters to play with.
TIPS:
1. Prepare the ingredients and kneading station in advance.
2. This is a messy activity so prepare aprons and covers that will cover all spillages!
3. Store play dough in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for extended use.
